What is health and obesity?
- Health is generally accepted to be related to physical well-being, but it is so much more than this. I believe that true health encompasses all aspects of our being – the physical, psychological, emotional, and social facets of who we are. Good health is about achieving balance and well-being in every part of our lives, not just in our bodies.
- Obesity can be defined as excessive fat accumulation that may negatively affect health. This is, again, only one aspect of the condition, which always carries deeper emotional, psychological, and social routes.
A variety of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, environment, and emotional struggles influences health and obesity.
People struggling with any health condition, including obesity, may face social stigma, discrimination, or internalized feelings of shame and low self-worth, which can contribute to further emotional distress.
Often, our lack of care for ourselves, manifesting in poor health and eating habits, can become a coping mechanism for stress, depression, or anxiety, and this cycle may become hard to break without understanding the underlying causes.
What is health and obesity counselling?
As a counsellor, my approach to supporting you with poor health and obesity is integrative and holistic. I work with you as a whole, understanding that your struggles with your health are deeply connected to your emotional and psychological state. I create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can openly explore your relationship with their physical well-being, food, body image, and self-esteem.
Resolving health and obesity issues
Counselling interventions include helping you uncover emotional triggers for overeating, developing healthier coping strategies, and working on changing negative thought patterns about your body.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) can help shift unhelpful beliefs, while mindfulness practices can encourage more conscious eating habits and self-compassion.
Additionally, we may explore lifestyle factors such as exercise and sleep, helping you set realistic and achievable goals toward a balanced, healthier life.
Ultimately, the goal is to support you in making lasting changes that feel empowering, not restrictive so that you can improve both your physical and emotional health.
