What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a complex and natural emotional response to perceived threats, but when it becomes overwhelming or persistent, it can interfere with a person’s ability to function.
Anxiety can manifest in a variety of ways—physical symptoms like a rapid or irregular heartbeat, fast or shallow breathing, irritability and panic attacks.
It can result in emotional symptoms, such as fear, dread, or a sense of impending doom. For some, anxiety may arise from specific triggers, while for others, it may feel like a constant, underlying sense of unease without a clear cause, and this can cause further distress.
It can be challenging to talk about as you may believe ‘it’s not that much of a problem’ or it could be that others may have said this to you.
How is anxiety explored in counselling?
My approach is to explore you as a whole, acknowledging not only your emotional state but also your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
Anxiety is not just a psychological condition but can be influenced by a range of factors, including past trauma, current stressors, or even lifestyle habits, especially those which may have helped initially but now are part of the problem.
In my practice, I create a safe and non-judgmental space for you to explore your feelings where you will feel understood and heard to enable you to begin to understand the root causes of your anxiety.
My approach will help you to identify the triggers and patterns that fuel your anxiety. Techniques like mindfulness, relaxation exercises, and grounding and stabilising skills can help you break the cycle of anxious thinking.
By integrating these strategies, you can develop healthier coping mechanisms and learn how to manage your anxiety rather than feeling controlled by it.
Resolving anxiety
Ultimately, the goal of integrative counselling is to empower you to reconnect with your inner resources and develop a deeper understanding of who you are.
In doing so, you can cultivate resilience and self-compassion, learning to navigate anxiety in a way that allows you to live a fuller, more peaceful life.
